Sports Betting Basics

Sports betting is the act of placing a bet on the outcome and predicting sports results. The number of bets that are placed on sporting events that are held in public is increasing dramatically, with sports betting being seen as a business that can make money for both the players and the bookmakers. With a growing number of people placing bets on sports events that are held outside of the US, sports betting has also developed a bad rep amongst some American sports enthusiasts. However, like all industries, the sports industry has its share of dodgy characters who prey upon innocent punters looking to place a small bet. These individuals would then use supposedly good sports betting tips to con their victims out of their hard earned cash.

Sports wagering is usually associated with point spreads and bookmakers, though the two are not always the same. Point spreads refer to the margins a bettor’s side has as part of his bet while the bookmaker’s odds refer to the point spread prices that he provides to the customers to help them place bets. The term ‘bookmaker’ refers to any company that facilitates sports betting transactions. Some people believe that all sports book companies are essentially the same but this is not the case as there are a number of different bookmakers out there whose policies, rules, terms and conditions vary from one another. For example, some sports book companies will provide the customers with different odds whereas some will offer them the same odds for all events regardless of the country in which they are playing.

With sports betting one can also take on other activities such as horse racing, football, baseball, hockey, rugby, and racing among others. In the UK, the most popular form of wagering is football where the game of soccer has developed over the years into a hugely popular spectator sport. In this form of wagering one can place a bet either for their favorite team or against the opposition they are rooting for. In horse racing, punters are able to bet on whether the horse they select to race will end first, second or third in the race or whether it will come in at the very end.
