Association football, also known as just football or soccer, is an organized team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. It is played professionally by about 250 million people in more than 200 nations and dependencies, which makes it the most popular sport in the world. The game has several layers, the main being kicking the ball through a number of goals (known as goals) to score points. Goals are scored when the ball is hit with a part of the net or into an object that is located inside the goal-posts.
A game of football is generally played on an empty field, although some professional leagues play games on artificial turf. However, in most leagues, the field is generally made of a hard surface, making goal-posts and foul lines impossible to see. The only way to see what is happening on the field is from the stands, which are often crowded with people cheering for the home team. In many countries, especially in Asia and South America, where soccer is considered a religion, the game is very popular and has great social importance. Many people spend much of their money to attend matches and some cities have huge football stadiums where the matches are regularly watched by millions of fans.
In this sport, players take turns kicking the ball with their feet. Kickers are known as forward or strikers and the sport players are referred to as passers, or mids. Football is played at different pitches and the playing surface may change from one country to another. Most football players wear knee pads and shirts, while other wear shorts or jeans. The boots used for the sport are specially designed to provide ankle support and are also lighter than usual shoes, because the game requires rapid movements of the feet.
